Sunnylope Rock Garden
Marion Blake, an artist whose creative journey spans decades, specializes in drawing, ceramics, and painting. Her work is deeply rooted in a lifelong passion for exploring color, pattern, and the play of light and shadow inspired by childhood memories of creating designs with her sisters. Whether working with clay, brush, or pencil, Marion finds joy in the act of creation, transforming simple materials into works of art.
In addition to her artistic pursuits, Marion has a deep connection to the Sunnyslope Rock Garden, a unique and historic site she has lovingly cared for over the years. The Rock Garden, originally created by Grover Cleveland Thompson in the 1950s, is a whimsical environment filled with concrete figures, miniature buildings, and vibrant sculptures made from found objects. This folk art garden, inspired by the Petersen Rock Garden in Oregon, reflects Thompson’s creative spirit and skill as a construction engineer, despite his lack of formal artistic training.
Marion has dedicated herself to preserving this magical space, recognizing its significance as a cultural and artistic treasure. Her stewardship of the garden is a testament to her belief in the importance of preserving history and celebrating the unique art forms that emerge from personal passion and dedication. Visitors to Marion's studio during the Sunnyslope Studio Tour will not only have the opportunity to experience her artwork but also to glimpse the enchanting world of the Sunnyslope Rock Garden—a true jewel in the heart of the community.
