Painter, Printmaker
Ed Taylor is a painter, but has more recently turned his hand to print making where he carves blocks of linoleum and splintered plywood, to print on his vintage letterpress equipment.
He takes an experimental approach to his work and has used various supports including copper plate primed with garlic juice, burlap coffee bags primed with roof sealant , ink on paper made from camel waste and colored pencil on 3M paper from the dollar store.
His work is often detailed, crisp and vibrant and at other times spontaneous with sprinkles of graphite powder shaken into wet varnish on wet oil paint.
He imbues his art with a sense of optimism, globalism and wonder. Using patterns, puzzles and negative space, his artwork often has a mesmerizing, floating and tribal quality.
Ed grew up in New Zealand and had a penchant for drawing from a young age, but he didn’t pursue it seriously until 1992 at age 30, when he moved to London England and enrolled in a fine arts school . He moved to Phoenix in 2001 and became a U.S. citizen in 2011.
He hopes that his artwork will encourage others to slow down and consider different perspectives, to better understand our place in the world
